There are all sorts of products out there that claim to lower energy usage. Some of them do and some of them don’t. Take compact flourescent light bulbs for example; They produce the same amount of light as an incandescent bulb but uses lower wattages (as much as 60% less wattage). They save you money because they use less power and give you the same result.
I have seen advertisements for things that you stick in an outlet that magically "improves" the efficiency to whatever is plugged into it. I advise you to be wary of products like these.
I also have been seeing an ad for an quartz, infrared electric space heater. The ad touts the heater as being able to save you 50% on your heating bill. This may be true, but remember it is still a space heater, and you will have to make drastic changes to your central heating system’s thermostat (running it at around 50 degrees) to save that significantly on your electric bill.
There is no "magic bullet" to consistently lowering your electricity usage. It is a combined effort of conservation, energy-efficient appliances, and common sense.
